Oneirocritica: Journal of Dream Studies is an interdisciplinary academic journal that approaches dreams not merely as individual experiences or clinical data, but as multilayered phenomena intertwined with culture, memory, language, history, and consciousness. Named after Oneirocritica, the seminal work of the 2nd-century dream interpreter Artemidorus, the journal aims to bring the long-standing tradition of dream thought—from antiquity to the present—into dialogue with contemporary research approaches. Artemidorus’s dream compilations, shaped within the Anatolian geographical and cultural context, represent early examples
demonstrating that dreams acquire meaning not only at the individual level but also within social and cultural frameworks. This historical legacy constitutes the intellectual foundation of Oneirocritica. In Oneirocritica, dreams are not treated as rigidly categorized products of consciousness; rather, they
are understood as part of a spectrum of consciousness oscillating between wakefulness, imagination, memory, and affect. Nightmares, recurrent dreams, and transitional dreams are examined alongside the role of dreams in ancient teachings, in dialogue with modern psychology and neuroscience.
Cultural narratives, myths, literary texts, and oral traditions serve as key reference points for understanding the relationship between dreams and collective memory.
Oneirocritica welcomes dream-focused studies from a wide range of disciplines, including psychology, psychiatry, psychoanalysis, anthropology, philosophy, cultural studies, history, literature, art, and religious studies. The journal seeks to approach dreams through a pluralistic and critical perspective, avoiding reductionist explanations.
